The PCR method

The PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method enables direct detection of infectious or parasite agents through enzymatic amplification of a part of their genome. This specific method can target and detect very weak quantities of pathogens in different types of samples.
In genetics, when studying a genomic area, a PCR assay is the first step. It focuses on the area concerned and searches for polymorphisms associated with an illness or with a specific sensitivity to certain infectious agents or treatments.

Scanelis laboratory uses Real-Time PCR* for analytical testing. It offers major advantages over conventional PCR.
These are:

  • Quantitative analysis when needed
  • Strain typing with specific fluorescent probes (ex: for vaccine strains / field strains)
  • Reproducibility
  • Very high sensitivity
  • A guaranteed and secure result (no post-PCR step means no carry-over contamination risk and no false positive results)
  • Automated analysis

The development of real-time PCR assays requires expertise in molecular biology. These assays are very specific and must be adapted to the field. During the development stage and also during routine testing, Scanelis ensures that the specifications of its tests are suited to users’ needs. Some assays have been improved and validated to keep up with to the evolution of infectious agents (i.e.: the distemper virus).
