What is detected by PCR?

The Polymerase Chain Reaction is a DNA amplification method used for diagnostics.
The DNA of a cell, a virus, a bacteria or a parasite can be detected by PCR.
A derived method, called RT-PCR, can be used to detect RNA, the genetic material of some viruses.
