Canine coronavirosis

Reasons for testing

 Diagnostics of digestive form of coronavirosis
 Assessment of the epidemiological risk (to reveal the viral spread in a group of dogs)
 Assessment of the environmental contamination

Test characteristics

 quantitative RT-PCR
 Limit of detection
 Quantitative analysis (viral load)

Diagnostic samples

 Rectal swab (even post-mortem, dry swab without any preservative or culture medium)
 Environmental swab

Result interpretation

• Negative result : absence of canine coronavirus or quantity lower than the limit of detection
• Positive result
  • Low or very low viral load : healthy carrier (infection without clinical relevance).
  • Medium, high or very high viral load : these loads are compatible with coronavirosis or coinfection (infection with canine parvovirus or parasites like Giardia or Coccidia should be looked for). A single Coronavirus infection sometimes leads to hemorrhagic diarrhea and sudden death in puppies (mainly between 2 and 3 months of age).
• As Coronavirus is very frequently detected in group of dogs, epidemiological and clinical context must be considered to interpret viral loads.
